What is the supply pipe?

The supply pipe is the water pipe that connects the water main stop tap, (normally found on the pavement) and the internal stopcock. The pipe may be made of plastic, lead, copper, or cast iron.

The person responsible for the pipe has a responsibility to ensure that this pipe is not leaking. The local water authority has the power to insist on investigation and repair, or they can do the work without permission and send the landlord the bill.

Have you been served with a notice?

If you have been served with a notice informing you that you have a potential leak it is important to act now.

If you don’t, there may be costs incurred from a number of channels or significant damage to property should the leak continue. It is important that the dangers of water escape are not underestimated.

How Do We Find A Supply Pipe Leak?

Our engineers are trained and equipped with the latest equipment on the market to locate a supply pipe leak.

This new technology can, and very often will, pinpoint the location of an underground leak to an area within centimetres and furthermore will identify the depth of the pipe that is damaged.

Although we can, it’s very rare that we need to use other methods such as acoustic devices or tracer gas.

Our kit is clean, safe, eco-friendly, and extremely accurate, so you can feel confident that the job will be done as efficiently as possible.

Why use swift leak detect?

The major advantage of our system, in comparison to that of many other swift experts in the UK, is that the excavation is kept to an absolute minimum.

We pride ourselves on our professionalism, our quality of service, and our position at the forefront of the market, with safe and reliable technology a core of our operation.

If you’re unsure, please feel free to give us a call. We’ll be happy to talk you through the process and give you some peace of mind.

What is acoustic leak detection?

Water pipes with a leak constantly create a noise. For many years, engineers have used the noise emitting from water leaks as a way to try to find the source. Fortunately, technology has moved on from using mechanical listening sticks to detect and locate leaks. Swift engineers use advanced digital and electro-acoustic technologies. Our specialised equipment allows us to identify, locate and diagnose water leaks in residential, industrial and commercial environments.

When a pressurised water pipe is damaged, the water leaks out into the surrounding areas at high speeds. The external water flow causes the pipe and surrounding material to vibrate at the exit point. Swift engineers use acoustics, which are sensitive microphones to enhance the sound of the leak. We amplify, filter and process these sounds to assist us in identifying a leaks location.

What are the benefits of Acoustics to Trace and Access?

Precise Accuracy

Every leaking pipe creates a noise and with the latest technology available, our engineers can enhance and amplify the noise to pinpoint the location of the leak. The noise, causing a vibration, is transmitted through the pipe and can be picked up to locate the source of the leak.

Completely Non-Invasive

We find leaks without the need for any invasive building work, regardless of how hidden or deep they are. Other leak detection companies might be forced to damage your property in the hope of getting closer to the source. Trace and Access do all of our detection work completely non-invasively.

Access Buried Areas

Acoustics are particularly useful when a pipe is very well insulated or buried deep in structural materials. When this is the case, a change in temperature can not always be identified, rendering thermal imaging an ineffective tracing method. With acoustics, Swift don’t need to be close to the origin of a leak to know where it is.

What is endoscopic leak detection?

Endoscopy makes it possible for our engineers to see in places their heads won’t fit. When direct line of sight is not feasible, endoscope cameras are used to view inside cavities. It is an optical device, a tube with an eyepiece on the end and an objective lens the other, linked by a relay optical system.

Endoscopic cameras, or borescopes, are used for inspection work where the inspection area is inaccessible by other means. Their most useful aspect is that they provide Swift engineers with a full image of the leaking area. Swift use endoscopy to identify, locate and diagnose water leaks in residential, industrial and commercial environments.

What are the benefits of Endoscopy to our Swift engineers?

Completely Non-Invasive

At Swift we endeavour to keep disturbance of occupants and building operations to an absolute minimum. By guiding the tube of the endoscopic camera, our engineers do not need to damage the fabric of the building to access the leak. The visual image of the leaking area tells our engineers exactly where and what the problem is.

Uncover Hidden Areas

Swift endoscopic cameras have their own light source, allowing us to see into dark hidden spaces. With many potential obstacles, leaking areas are often difficult to see, so Endoscopy a powerful tool for our team. This means our engineers can locate and diagnose any issues with a full image of the leak’s source.

Visual Leak Detection

The main advantage of using endoscopy, over other forms of leak detection, is that it provides our engineers with a live visual representation of the source. This can reduce repair costs significantly, because the precise nature of the leak can be easily discovered. There are multiple forms of action to take in order to remedy a leak, endoscopy effectively aids that process.

What is thermal imaging leak detection?

Infrared Thermography is the only diagnostic technology that lets our engineers instantly visualise and verify temperature differences in buildings. Thermography relies on the amount of heat either enclosed within, or passing through a building element, such as a water pipe. If there is a water leak then our cameras detect the difference in surface temperature which provides our engineers evidence of where the leak is originating from.

Our team at Swift use thermographic camera equipment in order to identify, locate and diagnose water leaks in residential, industrial and commercial environments.

What are the benefits of Thermography to Swift ?

Precise Accuracy

A major benefit of using thermal imaging is its high level of accuracy. Our trained engineers ensure the thermal image is taken correctly and can easily decipher what can be inferred from the image. Our Swift engineers are all very experienced with this method, allowing them to pin-point leaks with incredible accuracy.

Fast Results

As this method of leak detection only requires taking pictures of the affected areas and analysing them, it works particularly quickly. Thermography allows our Swift engineers to survey buildings or elements from a distance with minimal disruption.

Completely Non-Invasive

Thermography gets rid of the need for building disassembly unlike the traditional dig and drill methods of leak detection. Thermal imaging scans the leaked areas and finds where the origin of the leak is. Therefore, reducing the disturbance of occupants and building operations.

What is Tracer Gas leak detection?

Tracer gas always makes its way to the surface. After draining a water pipe, Swift engineers can introduce a tracer gas back into the pipe to detect a leak. Should there be any exit of gas, our engineers will detect it on the surface using their highly sensitive gas detector. The point where the gas exits the pipe will be precisely the location of the leak.

Our engineers use Tracer Gas to identify, locate and diagnose water leaks in residential, industrial and commercial properties. This method allows us to test hard to reach pipes for leaks with minimal disruption to your property. Tracer gas is a method useful for any size or type of underground pipe and does not leave any residue or require removal of a product prior to testing.

What are the benefits of Tracer Gas to Swift ?

Completely Non-Invasive

We have been successful in locating leaks in buried pipes, even when they are covered with dirt and paving materials. The main advantage of Tracer Gas is that it will locate leaks in any material. It is extremely versatile and does not require our engineers to go digging into buildings. Using our accurate gas detectors our engineers local the source of the leak without damaging the fabric of your building.

Fast and Accurate

Testing with Tracer Gas is often the fastest and most economical way to locate leaks in buried pipelines. The source of the leak is not always obvious and even very large leaks or breaks in pipes will not always allow water to come to the surface. Water can be channelled long distances along the pipe and drain underground. Tracer Gas always comes to the surface where it is easily detected by our experienced engineers, unlike water.

100% Safe

Tracer Gas is a food grade gas, so is completely safe for Swift engineers to enter into drinking supply pipes. It has been approved and tested to enter all types of water pipes including drains, water mains, grey water waste systems, fire loops and petroleum pipe lines. The advantages of this gas mixture is that it is non-flammable, non-toxic, non corrosive and completely healthy to the environment.
